Assignment for "SearchPath":  Electronic Tutorial for Research Skills

Copyright (©) 2006 by Julia McGregor, Inver Hills Community College (2-22-06)

IHCC’s library has a new electronic tutorial for learning some research skills.  Your task is to complete all of the modules and quizzes for that tutorial.

Here is an overview and some guidelines of what you need to do.

1.      Go to the college library’s website: http://www.inverhills.edu/Library/

2.  Scroll down and click on

New at the Library - Search Path - a tool to help you increase your

 information literacy skills.

3.      On the new page, click on “First Time Users” and read through the two or three screens there.

4.      Go back to the Search Path home page and click on “Return Users” to begin the first of six modules.

5.      Each time you complete a quiz – at the end of five of the six modules—print out the final screen that displays your name and your quiz results for that module.  Save these to turn in on Tuesday, March 14.

Note:  Module 1 has subsections for magazines, journals, newspapers, books, library catalog, encyclopedias, an article database, and the World Wide Web.  (That is just the list under “Types of Sources.”  You have to click on each of the icons for those words to complete the module.  Don’t skip anything.)

Things to Remember

·          Do this tutorial carefully, even taking notes.  I want you to learn every single concept and guideline that is in this tutorial.  This is not a point-and-click exercise.

Special Instructions for Module 3:  Using WebPals

1.      Read the information on this new page but do not click UNTIL you get to the words “”Author Searching.”

2.      Click on “Author Searching” and complete that module.

3.      Click on the “Back” button at the bottom of the last screen to return to the previous page.

4.      Click on “Title Searching” and complete that module.
