2005 Assessment Survey for
the 3 Villages: A Table of Needs

Jeff Hall asked his close friends Brima and Sheku in Jokibu to develop and update a survey of needs of their own village and its two nearby sister villages.  The results are below.  As Jeff says, there are "LOTS of kids in primary school!  You can see 2/3rds drop out before secondary school.  The number of widows and orphans is staggering.  There always were widows and orphans (I'm not sure how many) because people die from sickness and disease, but obviously the war made things much worse."  Here are the 2005 results:

**Zinc (metal) roofing, which SLPP is providing,  is relatively permanent.  Traditional thatch lasts a year or two.  Tarpaulins (mostly provided by UN assistance) may last two or three years.  Holes in thatch and tarps lead quickly to degradation of mud brick walls that otherwise would last many years without replacement.
