December 2008--Meet

Nyawoh Kenneh

Nyawoh is in her first year of secondary school (6th Grade) at Holy Ghost Secondary School in Segbwema and is adjusting to an entirely new lifestyle.  She grew up in Foindu and attended primary school in the village alongside her six brothers and sisters.  Each day when school let out at 2 p.m., she and her siblings met their parents at their family rice farm, and worked the land until dark.  As the middle child, Nyawoh is used to lots of company and enjoys the afternoons that they spend together.

However, now that Nyawoh has entered secondary school through the sponsorship of the Sierra Leone-Plymouth Partnership, she lives with distant relatives in Segbwema, 25 miles away from her parents and brothers and sisters.  In the village she was surrounded by family, but in Segbwema she must care for herself.  She carries as much rice as she can from the village to her lodging in Segbwema, and often returns to the village on weekends to resupply.  At night, after having attended school for much of the day, she must prepare her own meal.  Though her mother is a better cook, Nyawoh is trying to improve and says that on special occasions she can make good groundnut soup (a dish containing groundnut paste (peanut butter), onions, palm oil, tomato paste, and chicken) served over rice.

Living in Segbwema without her family makes life more difficult for Nyawoh, especially since things in larger towns are more expensive and food isnt as easily available.  Despite these hardships, Nyawoh is very happy to have the opportunity to continue her education and would like to become a nurse or a traditional birth assistant in her village.
