June 2009--Meet

Bockerie Joe

Bockarie is a shy student at Holy Ghost Secondary School in Segbwema.  He is a JSSII (Grade 8) student there; however, he is from Foindu, a village of about 2,000 people that is 25 miles away.  His father and mother live in Foindu along with those of his siblings who are still in primary school.  All four of his brothers and his sister attend school, something that is somewhat rare in Sierra Leone, where large families, expensive school fees, and work-intensive farms hinder children's ability to further their education.

This area of Sierra Leone is a mix of Muslims and Christians, and religion is an important part of the culture in the village.  There is tremendous religious tolerance: each community meeting begins with prayers in both the Muslim and Christian manner, and villagers often pray in both ways.

Most of the schools, however, are either Methodist or Catholic.  Bockarie is a Christian; his favorite subject in school is Religious and Moral Education, a subject taught in all religious schools in here.  He cannot study this on his own, though, because Holy Ghost, despite being a Catholic institution, has only one Bible available to share among over a thousand students.  Instead, his teacher writes the verses and lessons on the board for him to write down and memorize.  Those students who feel that they know a passage particularly well may recite it in front of the entire school during the morning devotion.  Bockarie enjoys learning about Christianity and would like to become a priest one day.
