Since 1972, The Hellenic Student Association at the University of Minnesota (H.S.A) has become one of Minnesota 's prominent supporters of Hellenism, by organizing a wide variety of events, which give the opportunity to a diverse ensemble of people to explore Greek culture and history.
Continuing this tradition, the Hellenic Student Association is planning to present the theatrical adaptation of Plato's monologue “The Apology of Socrates” this coming October, performed by renowned Yale Alumni and Emmy™ Award winning actor Yannis Simonides, and directed by Loukas Skipitaris. One of our primary goals as an Association is to present “ The Apology ” not only to the University Community, but also to anyone who is interested in Greek culture.
The Apology has been performed in a variety of places such as Universities, schools, libraries, communities and theaters in the United States and Greece to great acclaim. It was performed at The United Nations and received a standing ovation from the attending diplomats, who understood both the humor and contemporary relevance of this fresh translation by the actor and director. Finally, Mr. Simonides was invited by the NBC Network to speak about Socrates and perform a small portion of “ The Apology” in one of Athens oldest sections, the “Agora”.
The Apology has been very popular among young people, as it was evident at recent appearances at the University of Missouri in St. Louis and the Boston Latin School . The performance reflects on ethics, justice and civic duty - issues the young must think about and incorporate into the fabric of their lives. A question-and-answer period follows the performance, where the audience may share thoughts about the play, the classical Greek and Greco-roman culture in general.
Prior to the performance, a brief introduction will be held at. Following the performance, a discussion will be organized by scholars, who will answer questions regarding the performance. Appetizers will be served at that time.
On behalf of the Hellenic Student Association, we hope you enjoy this event.
