Hmong Minnesota Student Association is a student organization at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. It was established for the following purposes:

A. To promote, preserve, and maintain the Hmong culture and heritage;
B. To help its members develop cultural, social, leadership, and communication skills;
C. To help direct students towards resources that provide academic assistance;
D. To provide awareness of post-secondary education for Hmong high school students;
E. To develop good relationships with, and to educate the University community, as well as outsire communities, about the Hmong culture, language, history, and hertiage;
F. To be a support group.

HMSA was established in the spring of 1986 by six undergraduates: Juavah Lee, Lee Pao Xiong, Long Yang, Ker Vang, Kao Lee, and Long Khang with additional assistance from former Student Unions and Activities Director, Conrad Jones. It was originally a branch of the Lao Student Association (LSA). With the growing Hmong population and it diverged from the branch to become its own student organization.

HMSA started with about forty members altogether. However, following the wave of immigrants in the early 1990's and a Hmong nationalist movement in the mid-1990's, HMSA flourished to encompass more than one hundred fifty members. Eventually, HMSA was granted office space in Coffman Memorial Union due to its increased number of participants and the ongoing activism of its members within the University of Hmong community as a whole.
