A crew of roughly a dozen foolhardy adventurers have braved the cold frozen tundra of the Southern Lake Superior shoreline and the Chequamegon National Forest each year since 1975 to partake in a snowmobile excursion called the 'Big John Expedition', a term created by the original event producer Tom 'Carb Ace' Elmquist and inspired by 'Big John' Pearson of St. Paul, Mn. and Cornucopia, Wis.
The loyal crew has been extremely consistent each year, and few ever miss an outing except under extreme family duress. The sledders at the 34th Annual Celebration in 2008 were representative of the population to date. Those participating (with years of service credit) were: John Pearson (34), Roy Bewick (33), Dave Hagen (31), Paul Bewick (28), Bill Schroeder (26), Tom Elmquist (26),Jim Alford (19) Tom Orne (17), Lee Branwall (9), Barry Melchior (5) and Rocco Angarola (4).
If you have a video playing software (Windows Media Player, etc)you could join us on a run through the woods here:
