Overview

My research in the last ten years has mainly focussed on organizational aspects of GIS. Projects funded by the Federal Geographic Data Committee examined data sharing practices of local governments in the US. An ongoing project supported mainly by the National Science Foundation examines the development of the Polish Spatial Data Infrastructure, particularly approaches to dealing with land cadastre and land tenure discrepancies in rural areas.I am also involved in research on bicycle commuter behavior using GPS data.

This research considers the social construction of geographic information technologies from various perspectives including actor-network theories, thick descriptions, disciplinary history, and semantic analysis. It involves taking various historiographic, descriptive, and prescriptive positions to actively engage the past, present, and point to perspectives for more inclusive, democratic developments. I am also interested in spatial analysis, generalization, and semantic interoperability as representations.

The teaching activities I carry out in and outside the university setting extend this philosophy through the development and support of active learning environments to educate future GIS professionals and researchers.
