PROFESSOR JOHN KARL EVANS
Professor
of Greek and Roman History, John Evans joined the faculty in History at the
University of Minnesota in 1977. He received his BA with honors from UCLA in
1967, majoring in History and Classics. He completed his MA in History at UCLA
in 1969, and received his Ph.D. in History from McMaster University in 1974.
His doctoral dissertation, The Rhetoric of Tyranny: Senatorial History and
the Principate of Domitian, was honored by the Canada Council as the
outstanding doctoral dissertation completed at a Canadian university in 1974.
His most recent book, War, Women, and Children in Ancient Rome (London,
1991), was hailed in 1993 by the review periodical Choice as one of the
"outstanding" academic books to appear in 1991. He is currently in
the final stages of preparing a two-volume study of prostitution in Greece and
Rome. A recognized authority on the history of women and peasantries in the
classical world, Professor Evans teaches survey courses on Greek and Roman civilization,
and advanced courses on Pharaonic Egypt, Greek and Roman historiography, and
Roman history. His graduate seminars normally center on the history of women in
antiquity, with a heavy emphasis on interdisciplinary methodologies.
