About us

The Economics Student Organization is a student organization designed to provide you with opportunities to enhance your college education through social contacts, academic support, speakers and seminars. Activities of the ESO include representing student interests in the improvement of the undergraduate curriculum and the quality of teaching; sponsoring trips to various potential places of employment or internships; sponsoring lectures by professionals in economics and related fields; sponsoring projects dealing with career development and graduate schools; and sponsoring Rec Sports intramural sports teams and various social activities. The ESO receives funding from several groups within the University. ESO meetings and other events are announced on the ESO's website as well as ESO bulletin board in the main hallway, basement level, in Blegen Hall.

Constitution of the Economic Student Organization

 

Article I – General

 

Section 1:  The official name of this organization shall be the Economics Student Organization.

 Section 2:  The organization should operate as a non-profit organization.

 Section 3:  The organization shall abide by the applicable rules and polices of the University of Minnesota pertaining to student organizations.

 Section 4:  The organization shall exist for the following purposes:

To provide a forum for speakers to make presentations of timely interest to members on contemporary aspects of economics.

To provide a support group for students majoring in economics, including offering tutoring in various undergraduate economic courses.

To schedule visits and field trips to companies in the economics field.

To provide social events and activities for the membership.

 

Article II – Membership/Impeachment

 

Section 1:  Membership is open to all students without regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, disability, age, veteran status, creed, marital status, public assistance status, or sexual orientation.

 Section 2: Membership is open to all students interested in economics. Voting membership is open to all paid members. To become a member, follow the instructions on the website.

 Section 3:  Any member/officer may be impeached for misconduct (to be defined by the group).  The member/officer shall be given a seven day notice and an opportunity to defend him/herself.  The impeachment vote shall be given a 2/3 majority vote.

        1.Misconduct can be defined as but is not limited to: lack of attendance to scheduled meetings, incompletion of duties and responsibilities as listed, and failure to follow all  University Policies.

 Article III – Officers

 

Section 1:  The officers of the organization shall consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Webmaster, Marketing Chair, Historian.

 Section 2:  All officers must be currently enrolled students at the University of Minnesota.

 Section 3:  Officers should be elected annually or in the case of an unforeseen vacancy..

 Section 4:  Duties.

President

        Agenda for meeting; run meeting and keep everyone on task at the meetings; deal with the constitution; contact speakers if other people do not have an “in” with that particular speaker; maker sure everything that needs to get done is completed

Vice President

Run meetings when president is gone; check up on delegated tasks (makes sure that people are completed the duties they volunteered to complete); check e-mail daily


Secretary

Takes minutes; puts minutes on website/sends to webmaster to put on website; maintain membership list (so that the ESO can have a better check-in list)


Treasurer

Does everything that deals with money; reimbursements; knows information about bank accounts; collect dues and money for t-shirts; apply for grants (SUA wants grant write to be a person who attends all of the meetings); delegate to others for getting extra shirts, supplies, etc.

       Webmaster

Update and maintain the website and send out newsletter as necessary.

      Marketing Chair

Create, print, and distribute marketing materials and event promotions for the group.

        Historian

Document events of the group through photos or other media that will be used on the Website and other marketing documents.

 

 Article IV – Meetings

Meetings shall promote the growth and development of students interested in economics.

 Article V – Financial Matters


If ESO should cease to exist than our money should be donated to the Economics Department at the University of Minnesota.

Article VI – By-Laws

 May be proposed by members.

 Article VII – Amendments

Amendments to the constitution can be made anytime throughout the year by officers.
