The following are statistics that have been compiled from information sent in from various wildlife rehabilitation centers for the following years: 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1989.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Statistics for 1997

Number of rehab centers included in stats: 4

Number of Total Animals Admitted: 2396

Reasons for Admission (and total numbers where available):
Ant bites (1), unknown animal attack (3), car hit (9), shot (3), cat attack (6), dog attack (3), prisoners("human") attacked (5), caught in wall (1), window strikes (5), human injury (2), horse stepped on (1), hawk attack (1), fence entanglement (1), nest destroyed (10), orphaned (3), out of nest/wind (8), asphalt coated (1), sugar coated (2), orphaned (confirmed) (3), barbed wire fence injuries, run into wires, fish hooks and fish line, fractured wing, fractured legs, landing on land or pond too small to take off from (Grebes), hit mountains on migration (28 Grebes), lead poisoning, sticky fly strips, caught in chimneys (owls)

Comments:
Of 9 cat caught animals: 3 released, 1 DIC, 1 EOA, 3 DOA; 53 transfers within rehab group;
Species seen at one center: 1-armadillo; 5-cardinals; 7-chickens; 2-crows; 3-deer; 2-inca doves; 11-mourning doves; 2-ducks (rouen, pekin); 1-egret(cattle); 2- scissor-tail flycatchers; 4-grackles; 1-guinea; 2-ruby throated hummingbirds; 1-ibis; 2-blue jays; 5-killdeer; 1-mississippi kite; 3-purple martins; 1-Western meadowlark; 12-mockingbirds; 5-oppossum; 2-owls (screech); 2-pigs; 4-pigeons; 5-cottontail rabbits; 1-clapper rail; 1-robin; 7-house sparrows; 2-starlings; 15-barn swallows; 1-turtle (box); 3-black vultures; 1-redbellied woodpecker.

Human-related injury (2,525), cat attack (63), hit by car (33), orphan/immature (304), electrocution, barbed wire fence injury, window hit or suspected (57), other impact injury (26), broken bone(s) (130), dog attack (13), child attack (3), Salmonella or suspected (14), weak/emaciated/not flying (48), fish hook/line/gunshot/trap (18), soft tissue damage, unknown origin (35), caught in flycatcher strip (1), ant bites (2), gunshot (3), diseased (1), birth defect (blind) (1), fox attack (4), tree felled (1), poisoning (1), caught in monofilament fishing line, other (108).

Comments:
6,788 juveniles admitted by one center. Most frequently admitted species for one center = mallard duck.
Species seen at one center: cardinals-4; crows-4; deer-5; common ground doves-2; inca doves-4; mourning doves (including 2 eggs)-12; white wing dove-1; mallard ducks-4; finch (?)-1; ruby throated hummingbird-2; blue jay-6; killdeer-10; meadowlark-1; mockingbirds-17; opossum-7; quail-1; cottontail rabbits-8; lesser scaup-1; shrike-2; sparrow-4; chimney swifts-5; red bellied woodpeckers-3; Carolina wren-5.

Most frequently admitted species for one center: Cliff Swallow; Other commonly admitted species: Mallard, Magpie, Robin, Redpoll, Canada Goose.
