How to Search the WLREHAB Archives

First:
The EASY way to do this is to go to the archive search web page.

However, if you want to do it the "old-fashioned UNIX way", do the following:

To get an archived file of all posts for a particular week, for example, do the following:

Send email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU
with a blank subject line (or a .) and text that reads (for example):
GET WLREHAB LOG9601A

This will retrieve the archived file of all posts made in the first
week of January 1996.

If you are looking for a particular post, or all posts on a certain subject, you can do a database search of the WLREHAB archives.

Send email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK>EDU
with a blank subject line (or a .) and text that reads:
SEARCH xxxxx IN WLREHAB
where xxxx is the subject you are searching for.

So, if you are looking for oppossum information since 1/1/96, send the following message to listserv@listserv.nodak.edu:

search oppossum in wlrehab since 01/01/96 This command list will send you back a list that looks like this:

> search opposum in WLREHAB
--> Database WLREHAB, 6 hits.
> Index

Item # Date Time Recs Subject
      ------ -------- ----- ---- ----------------------------------
      000442 96/11/28 23:47 561 Member/location/specialty listing
      000522 96/12/15 11:52 605 WLREHAB member info
      000565 96/12/26 15:40 42 opposums & rabies
      001927 96/06/02 11:38 30 Opossum release age? (fwd)
      002096 96/06/08 13:31 28 Re: IMPRINTED O'POSSUM (fwd)
      002142 96/06/09 18:09 82 Re: IMPRINTED O'POSSUM (fwd)

NOW, once you find the exact post(s) which you want to receive, note which "Index Item #'s" they are, and send the following command string to:listserv@listserv.nodak.edu

For this example, I will request to get the posts #000565 (opposums & rabies), and #001927 (Opossum release age?); *Select 'opposum' in WLREHAB Print 000565 001927

The listserv host computer will then locate those files and mail them to you.

********************************************************
NOTE:
PLEASE LIMIT DATABASE SEARCHES TO 4 PER DAY and
PLEASE USE AS LIMITING OF SEARCH WORDS AS POSSIBLE
(to avoid using MAJOR computer time by searching for
very broad words with 100s or 1000s of matches); (if you
do that, our listserv host will not look favorably at us!)
********************************************************

Narrowing the search:

It is possible to add further parameters to your search in order to narrow it. You can limit a search by date with a "since..." predicate. Likewise, you can limit by sender and/or by the subject line with a "where..." predicate. For instance:

Search opossum in WLREHAB since 94/01/01
Search opossum in WLREHAB where sender contains 'Thomas'
Search opossum in WLREHAB where sender is devold@badlands
Search opossum in WLREHAB since 94/01/01 where subject contains 'nutrition'

These search limiters will (hopefully) dramatically reduce the number of index or print entries returned to you.

You can get more detailed information on database functions and the database command syntax by requesting the file LISTDB MEMO from LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU. You can send either a "GET LISTDB MEMO" command or an "INFO DATABASE" command to retrieve the file.
