National History

Delta Tau Delta was founded in 1858 at Bethany College in present day West Virginia Eight men, angered by a fixed vote for a prize in oratory to be given at the Neotrophian Literary Society (a forum for students to practice and demonstrate skills in poetry, public speaking and writing essays), responded by forming a secret society. The purpose of the new society, known only by the Greek letters Delta Tau Delta, was to see the Neotrophian Society returned to popular control.

Delta Tau Delta was born of the knowledge that integrity is essential. The founding principles of Truth, Courage, Faith and Power have provided a guide for both the Fraternity and its membership.

Since 1858 the Fraternity has spread to nearly 200 campuses with over 115 active chapters and colonies comprised of about 6,000 undergraduate members. Just shy of 150 years, Delta Tau Delta has in excess of 145,000 men who have become members of the Fraternity.

Beta Eta History

The Greek System at Minnesota started in 1874.  On March 23rd 1883, Delta Tau Delta, Beta Eta Chapter, became the third men's fraternity founded on campus.  But, when the Phi Delta Theta's folded in 1888, we became the second oldest men's fraternity at the University of Minnesota.

In the early years of the Chapter, several Delts would live in the same rented house.  This provided a center of the Chapter to meet, but this arrangement did not provide the stability needed for the Chapter.  Therefore, in 1906, the Chapter purchased a house at 1009 University Ave SE.  This house still stands today and has housed several other fraternities and sororities.  After a number of years at this location, it had become apparent that a larger and more convenient house closer to campus was needed

In 1921, the Chapter and the Central Office of the Fraternity broke ground at our current location of 1717 University Avenue SE.  The Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity began reconstruction of their current house in 1931
and Psi Upsilon Fraternity occupied the house that is now the Student Co-Op.
