The

Silence

of

the

Swans

When Peg Kerr decided to write a novel based upon her favorite fairy tale, "The Wild Swans," she found that she wanted to write two stories: one set in the 17th century, and one in New York City in 1981.

What did her two visions have in common?

How could they be

the same book?

Then a bus passed her, with a sign:

Silence = Death

Suddenly, the stories fit together.

We certainly had a fine Rivendell Group discussion on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1 p.m. at the Southeast Public Library, 1222 4th St. SE in Dinkytown (Mpls).of The Wild Swans, for which we were joined by the author, Peg Kerr.

Buy this book and read it even if you couldn't make the discussion in November. (Dreamhaven Books, Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore, Hungry Mind and the U of MN bookstore should have copies, along with most other bookstores, like the chains, by the way).

Peg hasbeen a member of the U of MN Rivendell Group, a fantasy literature discussion group, for many years, as a grad student at the U of M and as an instructor in University College/Extension. In past years we heard Peg read from chapters of the manuscript that was published earlier this year as The Wild Swans at our annual "Readings from Rivendell." Now we finally have a chance to read the whole story and see how the pieces fit together. Peg will join us for this discussion and answer questions about her novel, already being nominated for "best-of 1999" awards, like the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Book Award sponsored by the American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transsexual Round Table, and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award. [Recently, I misstated the award that the book had been nominated for, this is now here corrected--I'm sorry about the error, which I'm sure was mine].

Warner Books ISBN 0-446-67366-8 $13.99 (in Canada: $17.99) 400 pages.

And don't forget to mark your calendars for our annual December reading of original stories on Saturday, Dec. 4, "Readings from Rivendell," same time and place.
