How to run Pro/E remotely from Mac OS X

Requirements:

Mac OS X Jaguar v10.2.3 or later

An initialized University of Minnesota ITLabs account

1. Download and install X11, available here:

Get X11 for OS X 10.3
Get X11 preview for OS X 10.2

2. Open the X11 application.

3. Make sure X11 will use "Millions" of colors.  (In most cases your Mac will always be running in Millions of colors.  If this is the case, skip to step 4.)

         a. Open the Preferences menu item under the X11 menu.

         b. Click the "Output" tab

         c. Change "Colors" from "From Display" to "Millions"

         d. Quit the X11 application and relaunch it so your changes will take effect.

4. Connect to an itlabs machine.

         a. When you start up the X11 application, an xterm window should appear.  If it does not, select the "Terminal" menu item under the "Applications" menu.

         b. enter the following at the xterm command prompt:

                  ssh -l username -X -c blowfish -C host

replacing "username" with your X.500 username and "host" with the address of an itlabs machine.  A listing of the machines can be obtained at:

         http://www.itlabs.umn.edu/itlist.html

         c. The initial time your computer connects to a machine, it will say something about how the authenticity of the host cannot be established. Enter in "yes" to continue.

         d. Enter your ITLabs password when asked for it.

5.  Start ProE as you would on that machine.  Details on how this is done can be found at:

         http://www.me.umn.edu/courses/me2011/handouts/proestartup.html

6.  Enjoy!  Some notes:

         a.  Performance will depend mainly on the speed of your connection to the ITLabs machine.  Even with a fast connection, (i.e. you are on ResNet in the dorms) performance will be mediocre.

         b.  It may help if you are logging into a quick machine that no one else is using.  After you have logged into the ITLabs computer, you may enter the command "users" to see who is connected to the computer.  If there are a lot of users connected, Pro/E's performance may suffer.

         c.  You can run more than just Pro/E!  For instance, enter "netscape" and you will remotely run Netscape.  If you are logged into a math lab machine, you may run "matlab" and run a graphical version of Matlab on your own Mac!
