MYST in 3D

YST is one of the best-selling computer games of all time.  When it came out in the early nineties, its state-of-the art graphics introduced people to a whole new world of immersion in gaming.  The photo-quality images of realistic computer-generated environments created the illusion of an interactive world.  However, it was only an illusion.  Since only a certain number of "stills" were rendered in each environment, there was a limit to exactly where you could look or turn.

Since that time, computer technology has advanced increasingly.  Photo-realistic interactive worlds are no longer still frames as they were with MYST, but fully animated environments.  You can now look and go wherever you want to, without being limited by the direction of your cursor.  Any modern gamer will know exactly what I am talking about.  But what does this mean for Myst?

Recently, a remake of MYST, called RealMYST has been released, taking advantage of today's high-powered 3D graphics accelerators to create a fully interactive MYST environment.

Also within the last few years, nVidia has implemented support for 3D shutter-type and red/blue glasses into their downloadable drivers.  These drivers allow most Direct3D and OpenGL games to be played in stereoscopic 3D.  More information on this technology can be found on the nVidia website.

Using this technology, I have been able to capture several breathtaking screenshots from RealMYST, and have converted them into .JPS format.  You will need either the Vrex DepthCharge Viewer or the nVidia Stereo Viewer, which comes with the nVidia stereo drivers, to view the images below.  Also handy will be a pair of 3D glasses, but DepthCharge will also let you "free view" the images.  All of the screenshots are in 640 x 480 resolution.

Enjoy!
