About the WAS
Sharing Scientific Information
Beginning in Rome in 1978 through Hong Kong
in 1999, the WAS has successfully sponsored 14 international congresses attracting
thousands of participants from around the world. The 15th World Congress will
be held in Paris, France. The 16th World Congress will be held in Havana, Cuba.
Forming Networks
In addition to its worldwide membership, the WAS has
developed formal ties with prominent regional sexological organizations:
- The Asian Federation of Sexology
- The European Federation of Sexology
- The Latin American Federation of Sexology
The WAS has also developed strong ties with:
- The World Health Organization
- UNESCO
- World Psychiatric Association
Intercultural Exchange/Promoting Sexology
In furthering its goals of
promoting sexology worldwide and developing cultural exchange, the WAS is:
- Assisting in the creation of regional libraries
- Working to develop sexological societies in Africa, Asia, and Central America
- Addressing HIV-prevention efforts around the world
WAS Declaration of Sexual Rights
On August 26, 1999, the WAS General Assembly adopted a Universal
Declaration of Sexual Rights.
Position Statements
The WAS has endorsed position statements condemning:
- genital circumcision of women
- sexual torture in prisons
- gender biased-related incidents
- discrinimation based on gender or sexual orientation
