I extend a cordial invitation to all sexologists, sex educators, sex therapists and people of all disciplines to participate in the 14th World Congress of Sexology on 23-27 August, 1999 in Hong Kong.
As this will be the last World Congress in this century and on the verge of the next century, the theme of this meeting is appropriately titled: Sexuality in the New Millenium. During this next century, we are sure to face enormous social and cultural changes throughout the world. We must anticipate these changes and find ways to promote sexual health in new and significant ways. Sexual health is a basic human right but, as professionals, we must also recognize that we have duties and responsibilities to insure that these rights are established and maintained. We can fulfill this responsibility through the exchange of information regarding our research, teaching or treatment methods. There is nothing like the opportunity that a World Congress provides for the intercultural exchange of our work and the ability to promote sexology around the world.
The venue for the Congress is also particularly meaningful. As Hong Kong returned to China in July 1997, this congress will be the first World Congress held on Chinese soil. We will have the opportunity to see how sexology is studied in a culture which encompasses over one-quarter of the world population and in a place which has recently changed over from a Western to an Eastern government. What we can contribute and learn from this congress will certainly shed light on what we should and could do in shaping our sexuality in the coming century.
And, if you have never been to Hong Kong, you are in for an amazing experience and many surprises. Hong Kong is certainly one of the most exciting cities in the world and is poised to play such an important role in the intercultural exchange that will only be accelerated in the coming millenium. It is the gateway to the rest of China and Asia. I encourage you to take advantage of pre-and post-conference tours which have been arranged. We welcome you to this important scientific event and assure that you will never forget this World Congress and this amazing city.
