Lotus: Symbol of India Course

Custom Program

This course is a custom program offered jointly through the Center for Spirituality and Healing and the Learning Abroad Center.

 

Dates

Leave MSP on May 17, 2009, and return to MSP on June 4, 2009. In addition, two classes will be held before the group goes to India, and one class will be held after the group returns from India.

 

Place

East Bank of the University of Minnesota and other sites in the Twin Cities (before and after India); various sites in India.

Various sites in New Delhi and Dharamsala, India.

 

Faculty

Miriam E. Cameron, Ph.D., M.S., M.A., R.N., will teach this course, in collaboration with faculty in India who have expertise about Tibetan Medicine, Ayurveda, and Yoga.

 

Credits

A student can earn 4 credits.

 

Prerequisite Courses

  1. CSPH 5315 - "Traditional Tibetan Medicine: Ethics, Spirituality, and Healing.
  2. CSPH 5317 - "Yoga: Ethics, Spirituality, and Healing."

 

Course Description

Tibetan Medicine, Ayurveda, and Yoga are interrelated, ancient, holistic, Tibetan and Indian traditions that integrate ethics, spirituality, and healing. While studying with expert practitioners in India, students will examine the claim that systematic practice of these traditions promotes optimal health. Using critical thinking, students will evaluate philosophical knowledge, cultural practices, and scientific evidence, and propose research-based programs for integrating these traditions into personal and professional life.

 

Students

This course is open to University of Minnesota juniors, seniors, graduate students, and the public who have taken the two prerequisite courses, are in excellent health for traveling in a developing country, and have been accepted into the course.

Program Fee

The program fee covers four graduate credits, three classes in Minnesota, roundtrip airfare between MSP and New Delhi, international health insurance in India, and most costs in India.

We study at the Men-Tsee-Khang, the Tibetan Medical Institute of His Holiness the Dala Lama in Dharamsala, India.

Note that Dharamsala is near the north eastern border of India, just across the beautiful Himalayas from Tibet.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a large Tibetan refugee community live in Dharamsala.
