06-30-03      though a mere shadow of my former journalistical ardency, i am still a capable word maker uppist.

And June ends. I thought I'd take a break from unpacking college stuff. So here I am, typing to freebird and eating good & plenties. It's a rough life, but somebody's gotta live it.

Stanza du jour:

Have you gazed on naked grandeur where there's nothing else to gaze on,
   Set pieces and drop-curtain scenes galore,
Big mountains heaved to heaven, which the blinding sunsets blazon,
   Black canyons where the rapids rip and roar?
Have you swept the visioned valley with the green stream streaking through it,
   Searched the Vastness for a something you have lost?
Have you strung your soul to silence? Then for God's sake go and do it;
   Hear the challenge, learn the lesson, pay the cost.

The Call of the Wild

06-27-03      thousand words about what i saw yesterday.
06-14-03      awesome wonder

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

06-13-03      don't even bother reading this one. you were warned.

I have realized that of the many pictures I take, I only ever like about one in thirty-four or so. I completely made up those numbers, but my point is that the vast majority of my pictures lose something between my thinking, "mmm... loons," and my snapping the picture. I relish the occaisional success, even when nobody else likes it. So there.

06-11-03      june eleven.

I really can't record every stirring event of my last few weeks, but I think I remember a few highlights... Seeing Richard Voyles for the last time as I walked away from the machine architecture final, then noticing that, against all odds, I had retained my health an a strong will to live. Running every day since Group North started. Swimming across at least seven miles of frigid Spider Lake with the toughest man to ever attend Group North, Aaron Hintgen. Photographing loons with Joie. Dragging a canoe through a swamp with Anna. Driving Jim's dump truck, using his nail gun, and watching his face twitch as he wielded the backhoe. Winning a dirty sock in a bet. Hanging out with the Yellow Bandits. Not wearing a watch since before the last time I shaved. Thinking about King Josiah. Checking Isaiah 40, half afraid that it had changed overnight. Running through bogs, and relishing the soft mossy wetness. Stepping into that six-inch deep creek, then almost losing my shoe when it sucked me in past my knee. Paying four dollars to walk through the most disturbing zoo I have ever seen. Taking a phone call from Singapore. Finishing a 14.6 mile run. Buying a snakebite kit. Continuously being homesick for more than one place, and for some I've never been to. Hmm. Happy summer.
