Notes on Lineage Charts

The numbers in front of each name represent the numbers on the pedigree chart of our grandchildren. Double the number represents the name of the father. Double the number, plus one, represents the name of the mother.

The middle initial was always the first letter of the maiden name of the mother in the Mennonite Kleine Gemeinde (now the Evangelical Mennonite Conference), except where another person already had the same first name, same middle initial and same surname, which did not occur among my ancestors. I have included this initial for all those who lived after the Kleine Gemeinde was founded in 1812-15 (and even before then), where the mother's maiden name is known. I have done this even in the case of ancestors who did not belong, or may not have belonged, to the Kleine Gemeinde, at least in those cases where it might possibly be listed that way in records or publications pertaining to the Kleine Gemeinde.

Abbreviations for Lineage Charts

General Abbreviations

- = to (designating span of years lived)
/ = (event took place) between (these years)
/ = range of years within which event occurred
? = unknown or uncertain
+ = and for an unknown time thereafter
aft = after
app = apparently
b = (place of) birth
bef. = before
bp = (place [and date] of) baptism
br = branch church (Filiale)
bur = (place of) burial
bur = buried
ca. = circa (about)
Cath = Catholic (register)
ch = church (usually used to denote congregation to which ancestors belonged, especially where other data is uncertain)
conf = confirmed
d = (place of) death
est. = estimated (based on other data, e.g., birth of children)
Luth = Lutheran (register)
m = (spouse or place [and date] of) marriage
mI = first marriage
mII = second marriage
mIII = third marriage
NF = record not found in place from which person is recorded to have come
NN = name unknown (Latin: nomen nescio)
nr = near
OS = Old Style (Julian Calendar)
par. = parish (church district or location of congregational events)
r = (known place of) residence
Ref = Reformed (register)
reg = listed in (parish) register, sometimes that of the Lutheran or Chatholic church where an event was recorded
RM = Rural Municipality (equivalent of county)
tmp = temporary quarters, awaiting settlement in Galicia

Residence Abbreviations

All known places of residence, as well as places where vital events took place, are listed. Question mark indicates that data is uncertain. (All contemporary jurisdictions, except Galicia.)

Europe

WP = West Prussia (Royal Prussia, Poland, until Sept. 1772; city and rural territory of Danzig until 1793); counties listed are as of 1912, per Meyers gazetteer, with counties at the time of emigration, per 1808 revision list (Unruh, pp. 304-330) and Unruh (pp. 411-413), listed in parentheses, with slash between these sources, the first Amt being accurate for 1803-08 and the latter representing the Kreis at a later date
Gr. = Grosses
Mol = Molotschna Colony, Taurida Province, although official boundaries shifted; Molotschna was originally in Ekaterinoslav Province
Chor = Chortitza Colony, Ekaterinoslav Province
Markusl = Markuslandt Colony, Ekaterinoslav Province
Bor = Borosenko Colony, Ekaterinoslav Province
Hamb = Hamburg/Altona, Germany
Neth = Spanish Netherlands (incl. Belgium); aft. independence (ca. 1581), the Netherlands (no Mennonites left in Belgium by 1600)
