Click one of the thumbnail images to expand to the full size 500x375 image, 75-240k in size. The first batch of images were taken with a Kodak DC210+ digital camera over Labor Day Weekend, 2000. It was HOT (in the 90's and quite humid).

There isn't much to Millville and probably never was. Changing demographics in work opportunities (the Depression), hilly geography, agricultural techniques (big corporate farms) and lack of a rail line probably spelled an end to whatever otherwise would have developed (and perhaps destroyed). However, the basic beauty of the rolling bluff country, lack of urban sprawl, slow pace (no pace at all, maybe), and pastoral scenery are appealing in this ever more crowded and fast moving world.

Images 1-3: The road and some bluffs leading to Millville on the road from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Image 3 is typical of the main elements -- meadow, forest, bluff.
Images 4-5: The Wisconsin River, which flows nearby.
Images 6-9: More road and bluff shots just outside of town.
Image 10: Log cabin at the edge of town. I've been contacted by Clifford Simak's brother, who told me it was the Smalley cabin, and about 70 years ago (1920 or 30's) he joined them for pancakes inside.
Images 11-15: More roads and bluffs visible from town.
Images 16-17: The big crossroads at in town. Not much there beside an old schoolhouse under renovation. In the distance (image 17) are a few homes huddled against the bluffs down mainstreet.
Image 18: Looking in the direction of the river (not visible) from the crossroads.
Images 19-20: From the main lookout point at Pike's Peak (after Zebulon Pike) State Park, Iowa, across the Mississippi River. The river you see entering the Mississippi, among the many islands, is the Wisconsin. This view is about 5-10 miles from Millville. The missionary/explorer Father Marquette (1637-1675) discovered the Mississippi River for the Europeans at this location.

The second batch were taken with a Canon PowerShot A80 4 megapixel digital camera over Labor Day Weekend, 2004. I noticed virtually no outward change to the area in four years. The second batch are high resolution images, 1024x768 pixels, around 600k - 1.3mb in size.

Images 1-2: The Wisconsin River.
Images 3-4: County road leading from Prairie du Chien to Millville.
Image 5: Typical scene near the river.
Images 6-7 More road shots on the way to Millville.
Image 8-10: Bluff & field shots.
Image 11: Approaching Millville sign.
Images 12-13: Sign and restored schoolhouse.
Images 14-19: Various pastoral/bluff shots.
Image 20: Possibly the "Smally Cabin" (see Image #10 in the previous set). I noted the carcass of a deer(?) inside when I walked up to it in late August 2004.
Image 21: Standard pastoral shot: field, horses, bluff.
