* Goal: present U. S. genealogical links of counties geographically close without the limitation of state borders.
* For the best source of state & county links, see www.usgenweb.com
* Virginia Counties, Puerto Rico Municipios and Virgin Island Islands are not shown as the density of the letters of their names is too high.
* Some island territories of the U. S. currently have 0 population.
* Former territories of the U. S. include:
~1776-1842 Northern Maine, now Ontario, Canada
~1800-1846 Oregon Country above 49N, now British Columbia, Canada
1803-1818 Louisiana Purchase north of 49N, now Alberta & Saskatchewan, Canada
1803-1925 Minnesota: Treaty with Canada clarifies the boundary through the Lake of the Woods, resulting in the transfer of a few acres.
1898-1902 Cuba
1899-1946 Philippines
1904-1999 Panama Canal Zone
1939-1979 Canton, Enderbury, Washington, Fanning Islands, now Kiribati
1947-1994 United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, now Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia & Palau
Other U. S. - Canada boundary adjustments.
* Foreign territories under current or former U. S. jurisdiction are not listed here.
* These maps are equal area projections.
* Local map scale is 100 pixels/1 degree latitude. (About 60 miles/inch or 40 km/cm, depending on your monitor.)
* Both vertical and horizontal scales are the same.
* All local maps are the same scale.
* A corresponding name has not been found for this equal area-polar projection.
My projection is formed by intersecting a plane with the Earth forming a circle with a radius of 2.5 degrees latitude.
The circle is centered on the indicated latitude/longitude.
The top of the circle is orientated North.
The Earth is then projected on this plane in a non-linear fashion such that the great circle distance to the center is proportional to the plane's distance to its center.
Please e-mail me if you know the name of this projection.
