Dakota County is named for the Native American Dakota people. "Dakota" best translates into "The Friends". So, a friendly welcome to all visiting this free site in search of Dakota County genealogical information.

Dakota County, now located in the southern part of the Saint Paul & Minneapolis metropolitan area, is one of the original 9 counties of the Minnesota Territory of 1849. At first, Dakotah County, later Dakota, stretched from the Mississippi to Missouri rivers. The county was greatly reduced a few times before Minnesota statehood (1858) to about its present day size. This site centers on genealogical information of that reduced area from 1909 to as far back as we can go.
