A "mustache cup." The band inside the lip (on the right) was to help keep a genteman's mustache dry with every sip of coffee.
The bottom of a plate. This is a maker's mark, which gives a lot of information about where and when the piece was made. This mark indicates that the piece came from a manufacturer in Devonshire, England. This design was probably registered in 1872, and this piece was probably made within a few years of that time.
