Join the Revolution
"The worlds equilibrium hath been upset through the vibrating influence of this most great, this new World Order. Mankinds ordered life hath been revolutionized through the agency of this unique, this wondrous Systemthe like of which mortal eyes have never witnessed." -Bahá'u'lláh, Kitáb-i-Aqdas
"the supreme and distinguishing function of His Revelation...is none other than the calling into being of a new race of men" -Shoghi Effendi, The Advent of Divine Justice
The Faith of Bahá'u'lláh can be rightly considered a revolution. It is not a political, but rather a spiritual revolution. Its goal is to completely transform the world as we know it, to fully realize the unity of the human race. The following are a few of the ways in which the Bahá'í Faith is revolutionary.1
The human race is one family.
"The utterance of God is a lamp, whose light are these words: You are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Deal with one another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship." -Bahá'u'lláh, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf
"O Children of Men! Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created. Since We have created you all from one same substance it is incumbent on you to be even as one soul, to walk with the same feet, eat with the same mouth and dwell in the same land, that from your inmost being, by your deeds and actions, the signs of oneness and the essence of detachment may be made manifest." -Bahá'u'lláh, The Hidden Words
Men and women are equals.
"The world of humanity is possessed of two wings: the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly." -Abdu'l-Bahá
"Women and men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God." -Bahá'u'lláh
True unity is found in diversity, not uniformity.
"Let your vision be world-embracing, rather than confined to your own self." -Bahá'u'lláh
"The human species is an organic whole, the leading edge of the evolutionary process. That human consciousness necessarily operates through an infinite diversity of individual minds and motivations detracts in no way from its essential unity. Indeed, it is precisely an inhering diversity that distinguishes unity from homogeneity or uniformity. What the peoples of the world are today experiencing, Bahullh said, is their collective coming- of-age, and it is through this emerging maturity of the race that the principle of unity in diversity will find full expression." -Shoghi Effendi
We are primarily spiritual and essentially good beings.
"O SON OF BEING! Thou art My lamp and My light is in thee. Get thou from it thy radiance and seek none other than Me. For I have created thee rich and have bountifully shed My favor upon thee." -Bahá'u'lláh, The Hidden Words
"Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is a direct evidence of the revelation within it of the attributes and names of God, inasmuch as within every atom are enshrined the signs that bear eloquent testimony to the revelation of that Most Great Light...How resplendent the luminaries of knowledge that shine in an atom, and how vast the oceans of wisdom that surge within a drop! To a supreme degree is this true of man, who, among all created things, hath been invested with the robe of such gifts, and hath been singled out for the glory of such distinction. For in him are potentially revealed all the attributes and names of God to a degree that no other created being hath excelled or surpassed." -Bahá'u'lláh, Gleanings
World peace is not only possible, it is inevitable.
"The Great Peace towards which people of good will throughout the centuries have inclined their hearts, of which seers and poets for countless generations have expressed their vision, and for which from age to age the sacred scriptures of mankind have constantly held the promise, is now at long last within the reach of the nations. For the first time in history it is possible for everyone to view the entire planet, with all its myriad diversified peoples, in one perspective. World peace is not only possible but inevitable. It is the next stage in the evolution of this planetin the words of one great thinker, the planetization of mankind" -The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace
Religion and science are in harmony.
"The fourth teaching of Baha'u'llah is the agreement of religion and science. God has endowed man with intelligence and reason whereby he is required to determine the verity of questions and propositions. If religious beliefs and opinions are found contrary to the standards of science they are mere superstitions and imaginations; for the antithesis of knowledge is ignorance, and the child of ignorance is superstition. Unquestionably there must be agreement between true religion and science. If a question be found contrary to reason, faith and belief in it are impossible and there is no outcome but wavering and vacillation. ..." -Abdu'l-Bahá
Each individual has the responsibility to independently seek the truth.
"O SON OF SPIRIT! The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor. Ponder this in thy heart; how it behooveth thee to be. Verily justice is My gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes." -Bahá'u'lláh, The Hidden Words
"God has given man the eye of investigation by which he may see and recognize truth. He has endowed man with ears that he may hear the message of reality and conferred upon him the gift of reason by which he may discover things for himself. This is his endowment and equipment for the investigation of reality. Man is not intended to see through the eyes of another, hear through anothers ears nor comprehend with anothers brain. Each human creature has individual endowment, power and responsibility in the creative plan of God. Therefore depend upon your own reason and judgment and adhere to the outcome of your own investigation; otherwise you will be utterly submerged in the sea of ignorance and deprived of all the bounties of God. Turn to God, supplicate humbly at His threshold, seeking assistance and confirmation, that God may rend asunder the veils that obscure your vision. Then will your eyes be filled with illumination, face to face you will behold the reality of God and your heart become completely purified from the dross of ignorance, reflecting the glories and bounties of the Kingdom." -Abdu'l-Bahá, Foundations of World Unity
1 If some of these ideas don't exactly sound revolutionary to you, it may help to know that Bahá'u'lláh proclaimed them in the Middle East in the mid-1800's - long before civil rights, women's suffrage, and globalization.
