Imagine that you are in the middle of a huge valley surrounded by mountains with occasional cars crossing that valley on the only two lane road. And in the the middle of all this there is... a stop light. Yes we too thought it's bazaar :) Since we already passed Nenana this is a good spot to tell you pretty much the only thing I know about this place. In January each year a tripod is mounted on the frozen Tanana river which runs through Nenana. The tripod is secured to the ice and connected to a clock mechanism on the shore by a rope. When the ice breaks up (usually in late April or early May) tripod falls and trips the clock. People all around the world make bets on when it is going to happen and whoever guesses the closest date and time of breakup wins the pot (about $300,000). What's rather humorous to me that pretty much every year there are people who bet on June (!). They probably think that Alaska is a big chunk of ice. If that was the case I wouldn't be on my quest for glaciers, would I? :) |
