A Brief History
The Asian-American Student Union was established at the old
Dinky Dome building in 1975 as a result of the Civil Rights
Movement in the 1960’s and 1970’s. During this time
period, ethnic student cultural centers were created not just
as a response to the lack of minority representation on campus,
but as a central place for students to congregate and to promote
diversity on campus.
Initially, limited space was allocated for the student cultural
centers including Africana, Asian American, American Indian,
and La Raza at Appleby Hall. Merely two years later, the University
recognized ASU's tremendous contributions to the University
community through educational, cultural, social, and community
activities. The organization was moved to Coffman Memorial Union.
Today, the Asian-American Student Union continues to enrich
the culture of the University and benefit its students. The
dedicated membership organizes enriching seminars, workshops,
and conferences that celebrate diversity and highlight Asian-American
issues. The Asian-American Student Union strives to fulfill
the University’s vision of diversity, now and in the future. |
