    • An educational event for kids! AMS members set up tables with hands-on experiment and activities to engage the students with various scientific areas. The Outreach Program from the Chemistry Department hosts a Science Show. Please contact us if you are interested in participating (e.g. set up your own hands-on experiment/exhibit).

    • In collaboration with The Graduate School, AMS will be co-hosting the Career Networking Event (formerly known as the Career Mixer in Science). The purpose of this event is to provide graduate and professional students with the opportunity to network with industry, government, for-profit, and non-profit agencies as a way to facilitate the job searching process. Although not all employers will necessarily have openings available, we encourage students to come prepared and bring their resume and business/contact cards. Business casual attire is recommended. For faster check-in please bring your U card.

    • Our invited speaker for this year is Dr. JoAnn Trejo, an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Trejo’s laboratory focuses on studying protease-activated-receptor (PAR) signal regulation and function in the context of breast cancer. Please come and learn about her research.     • Dr. JoAnn Trejo, Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of California San Diego, will be giving a diversity lecture. She has an outstanding research track record and has spoken at several national diversity forums, including giving a keynote lecture at SACNAS. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post- doctoral, faculty and staff members of the University of Minnesota are welcome to attend.

AMS members set up tables with hands-on experiment and activities to engage the students with various areas of Science (i.e. Zebrafish Exploration, Caenorhabditis elegans, Plant exhibit, Soil biosphere, Gak, Color chromatography, Oil and vinegar, Brain, Acids and bases, Static electricity, Solid/Liquid/Gas, Spinning eggs). Additionally, the Outreach Program from the Chemistry Department hosted a Science Show.

    • March 2, 2010
    • The Lighthouse Academy of Nations is a charter high school for immigrants and refugee students in south Minneapolis. They have requested that AMS give a talk about science as a career.
  • Careers in Science Mixer
    • March 31, 2010; 4:00-7:00pm; Great Hall
    • An informal event to establish networks with a scientific corporate around the Twin Cities.

  • Roundtable: Grant writing workshop
    • February 16, 2010; 1:20-2:30pm; Moos Tower
    • This event consisted on two parts: the first was a presentation by Dr. Karin Matchett on the different aspects for effective grant writing. The second portion of the event was a Q&A session with panelist from a various departments. About 60 people registered for this event including postdocs and graduate students.
  • Community service: The Works Tech Fest
    • February 27, 2010; 8:00am-5:00pm; The Works Museum
    • This is a free event that involves hands-on activities for kids. Various AMS members volunteer to help with the various hands-on activities in this event.

  • Roundtable: CV writing workshop
    • November 11, 2009; 1:30-2:30pm; Moos Tower
    • This event explored all aspects of CV writing and was led by the Center for Teaching and Learning. About 90 people registered for this event.

October 2009

  • Advertisement/Outreach: NorthStar STEM Alliance Kick-Off
    • October 1, 2009; 6:00-9:00pm; Science Museum
    • This is a welcome event for NorthStar Scholars and participating faculty. The event feature poster presentations, seminars, and informal gatherings. AMS had a booth and Marian was the invited speaker. We had the opportunity to talk to various students about graduate school and research.
  • Members Meeting
    • October 8, 2009; 2:30-3:30pm; Jackson Hall
    • We planned to discuss the calendar for the remaining of the academic year and refreshments (chips and dips) were provided. However, no other members (aside from the officers) attended this meeting.

  • Advertisement/Outreach: Multicultural Kick-off Student Fair

    • This was an event geared toward motivating undergraduate students from multiple ethnic backgrounds to pursue graduate studies and to advertise to the general university body about the various events that AMS host.

    • This was an event geared toward motivating undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies and to advertise to the general university body about the various events that AMS host.
  • Welcome/Kick-off event: Ice Cream social
    • September 24, 2009; 4:00-6:00pm; NHH Atrium
    • This was an informal gathering including ice cream, cookies, coffee, and water. The event was well attended and many showed interest to know more about AMS.
