SECOND ANNUAL EDIBLE BOOK
EXHIBITION & HIGH TEA

Are ALL artists starving? Not necessarily! In the Second Annual Edible Book Exhibition & High Tea at AZ Gallery in Lowertown St. Paul, production and consumption met on April 1, 2001.

Have your art and eat it, too.

 1. "Forty Winks"
Sleep deprivation is a constant inspiration for night-owl Jeffrey F. Morrison, who's serving up an eye-opening dish of toast, vegetable dye, and pasta.
 
 2. "Chicken Little"
Peep! The sky is falling in this concoction of French toast and eggs, by our favorite marsh-mellow chick, Robyn Priestley.
 
 3. "Jacob's Lunch"
Flip through this cheesy take on a Jacob,s ladder book, five sandwiches high, by Rory Sparks.
 
 4. "East Meets West"
in this international dish of tortillas and Mediterranean flat bread by globe-trotter Kathleen Richert.
 
 5. "Let My People Go"
A moving experience to be sure, Pamela Schloff's matzo and prune dish will have you trotting back for more!
 
 6. "The Tree of Life"
Although bread is the staff of life, Lisa Pogoff's
branching out to include bagels and phyllo dough.
 
 7. "Untitled"
A secret recipe from Paul Wrench.
 
 8. "Harry Potter and the..." Michaelynn McCarron,s a sorcerer in the kitchen with a wizardly sweet potion of white chocolate, candy, and
frosting.
 
 9. "Chocolate Cheap Novel"
A potboiler by Marla Gamble, made from
wafer cookies and chocolate chip cookie dough.
 

 

10. "Book Lovers"
Enjoy a chocolaty tête-a-tête with Azure Marlowe.

 
 11. "Boil this Book"
Abby Hoffman would be proud of the pasta-bilities put forth by Pam Robinson's noodle-and-pesto combo.
 
 12. "Virtual Genesis"
Last year's edible book virtuoso Richard Parnell
tops off his latest concoction with caramel, offering a new spin on the Apple computer.
 
 13. "Eve's True Temptation"
Just apples? We don't think so. Brownie mix,
fruit, licorice whips and icing are the makings of this sinful creation from Robyn Priestley.
 
 14. "Anticipation"
Jeffrey F. Morrison is making us wait. Get hooked on this dessert of chocolate, powdered sugar, fishing lure and gummy worms.
 
 15. "Untitled"
Azure Marlowe is flying high with this heavenly
installation of cotton candy clouds and paper airplanes.
 
 16. "Anxious"
Feeling strung out? Take two aspirin (or a handful) and call Azure Marlowe in the morning.
 
 17. "Roquefort for Dummies: Cheesy Publishing"
In this introduction to
edible books, Pamela Schloff begins with foods not found in nature: Kraft singles, blue food coloring, and thread.
 
 18. "Mark My Word"
Don"t mess with Rhesa Schwartz, she'll scold you with licorice whips.
 
 19. "Junk Food"
Satisfy your cravings with this sweet and salty snack from Melanie Bethke, with candy, chips, Slim Jims and other no's-no's.
 
 20. "Literary Cake"
A wonderous creation of photo-engraved icing by Rebecca Pavlenko.

This exhibition was coordinated by Robyn Priestley, Jennifer Amie, Jeffrey F. Morrison, and members of Argyle-Zebra Artists' Cooperative, with the assistance of Minnesota Center for Book Arts. The exhibition is the brainchild of Umbrella Editions and Colophon Journal, which are sponsoring a webpage to accompy the international exhibition: www.geocities.com/books2eat

The exhibition was privately funded, organized and non-juried. The organizers would like to thank the members of A-Z Gallery, all participating artists, Jennifer Amie for writing the menu, Rory Sparks for television appearances, and anyone else that we bribed with leftovers.
