H. nakiana is a species hosta, meaning it occurs naturally in the wild somewhere on earth. It's name would seem to indicate it is of Japanese origin. It forms a dense mound and produces a great number of flower scapes which hold the blossoms well above the foliage. It grows very quickly and also produces a great number of seeds. I have lots of fun harvesting and planting open pollinated seeds from H. nakiana. None of my seedlings look spectacularly different than the pod parent, but just growing hosta from seed is a real thrill for me. It's not much of a challenge though, as there are many "volunteer" seedlings growing in the bed near the parents. H. nakiana is one of the first hostas I ever purchased and, despite its plain green color and tendency to be damaged by slugs, remains one of my favorites. Because it is a rapid grower, I have been able to give many divisions to friends as their "first" hosta.
