H. 'Great Expectations'

This photo was taken just after the plant emerged in the spring. It has only been growing in my garden for one season and was probably originally a tissue culture plant. It is one of the most colorful hostas to grow with a creamy white center surrounded by a border of blue and green. When it was first introduced, it was in very high demand, commanding very high prices from the privileged few who were able to afford it. Thanks to tissue culture techniques, the cost in now in the twenty dollar range for a reasonable size field grown plant. The original plant from which all others have been cloned was a "sport" of H. sieboldiana 'Elegans'. A sport is a new side shoot of an older plant, the sport having different characteristics than its parent.
