These three women were sisters of professional
architect Arthur Lees Nicholson. Sarah,
and Louisa were mainly watercolor artists as was their brother, Arthur.
Mary Alice worked with pencil drawings.
Sarah was born in l857, the oldest of 9 children. Her formal art school training
included classes taken in both England and Ireland. Later she taught drawing
in private schools in London and Belfast. In 1887 the
family emigrated to the United States and they settled in Rochester, N.Y. There
she worked at Sibley, Lindsay and Curr, a large department store, where she
did custom watercolors for clients. Her family have in their possession many
of the things she did in art school, a collection of watercolors she did both
in England and the United States and a sample of the kind of work she did in
her job in Rochester.
Mary Alice began her art at an early age doing mostly pencil drawing. These were
done for her pleasure and for her family.
Louisa never married. She had health problems and died
fairly young. She was a prolific artist, doing watercolors mostly for members
of her extended family.
