Reading Guide for

  • Basic [3/4 credit]: Assemble a "bullet point" timeline (6-10 key benchmarks, one short sentence each) that maps research on beriberi from Eijkman's interest in germ theory to the Nobel Prize.

  • Deeper [full credit, using info above]: Using the benchmarks identified above, identify general factors in scentific development exhibited in this case.
    OR
  • Challenging [5/4 credit or 3815, using above]: Describe the discovery of vitamins, relating it to the theme expressed in the title, and discussing how it poses questions for studying other cases in history of science.
