Brief Biography
Over the last seventeen years Ryan has been working on various
development projects in the Global South. Now, he is currently
a PERISHIP fellow and Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University
of Minnesota conducting his doctoral dissertation investigation on the
long-term social health of post-disaster planned communities. His focus on
seven Honduran communities twelve years after Hurricane Mitch
(1998) highlights not only how residents come together to create
community and how NGOs can influence this effort, but the interactions and
contradictions that are born from this process.
Ryan also volunteers with numerous national and international organizations
including: Global Effect, Solidarity in Health, The Futbol Project,
and the Institute for Post-Disaster Community Recovery. More recently,
he accepted a position as a Fulbright Alumni
Ambassador.

"Go to the people.
Live with them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with
what they know. Build with what they have. But with the best
leaders, when the work is done, the task accomplished, the people will say
'We have done this ourselves.'" --Lao
Tzu
