AIMS Assessment Resources

This page provides links to three free resources that you can use to assess students' statistical understanding: The ARTIST website, the ARTIST Item Database, and the ARTIST Topic Tests and CAOS tests.

ARTIST: Assessment Resource Tools for Improving Statistical Thinking

ARTIST

The Web site provides a variety of assessment resources for teaching first courses in Statistics.

ARTIST Online Item Database

The ARTIST Online Item Database is a collection of over 1100 high quality assessment items in a variety of item formats. You use an online tool called the Assessment Builder to search and select items from the database. Each item is categorized according to statistical topic and type of learning outcome assessed. The Assessment Builder can be used to generate files that can be edited with a word processing program.

ARTIST Topic and CAOS Tests

The ARTIST projects developed 11 online multiple choice tests on individual topics, called ARTIST topic scales. Each test consists of 7 to 15 items, and usually take 10 to 15 minutes for students to complete. The ARTIST project also developed the Comprehensive Assessment of Outcomes in a first Statistics Course (CAOS) test. CAOS consists of 40 multiple-choice items that were judged by a group of Statistics Education experts to cover important learning outcomes for a first course in statistics. For more information on how to register to administer the topic scales and the CAOS test, go to: https://app.gen.umn.edu/artist/tests/index.html
