What is AED?
AED (Alpha Epsilon Delta) is a National Honors Society geared towards students planning on attending medical school
after their undergraduate program.
What are the requirements to be a member of AED?
There are no requirements to be a local member of AED. Local members are allowed to attend our informational
meetings with guest speakers, attend volunteer events, and take part in other activities. There are, however,
requirements to be a national member of AED. National membership requires a 3.2 minimum GPA both overall and in
the sciences. It also requires 3 semesters of pre-professional health work.
What exactly does AED do?
AED at the University of Minnesota is dedicated to being the best resource on campus for students thinking
about medical school. We often have
guest speakers such as the U of M admission director, physicians in varied
specialties, medical students and residents, and representatives from Kaplan
and Princeton Review (MCAT prep). We also take part in many
volunteer events. Some past events include: making breakfast for families at the Ronald McDonald House,
volunteering at the Salvation Army, and food drives.
Do I have to be a "for sure" pre-med to join AED?
Absolutely not. Some members
join AED and listen to our speakers and find that medicine is not the career for them -- and that's fine,
too. We are just here as a resource for students considering medicine.
Sounds great! When are the meetings?
We have our meetings in Moos Tower Room 1-450 at 6:30 pm. Meetings are held twice a
month, on either a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. See our Activities page for
more information about upcoming meeting dates. These dates are, of course, adjusted around holidays.
Do I have to join before I attend the meetings?
We would appreciate if you paid the small local fee ($15) to help us cover expenses for our activities.
But there is no paperwork. Just show up to a meeting and speak with an officer!
I'm already a member. I want to be an officer next year.
We hold our officer elections at the end-of-the-year banquet in May. More news about officer positions is usually available in early- to mid-April. AED National requires that you be a national member by the time you begin your term. Our AED chapter has a second requirement -- that all officers have passed first-semester Organic Chemistry before they begin their office.
