Player Ranking Ladders
[ view singles ladder> ] [ view doubles ladder ]
The Rules:
- The purpose of the ranking ladders is to encourage players to improve badminton skills and make friends among the club members.
- Only club members could stay in the ladders.
- There will be two ladders
- Singles Ladder: This ladder lists men's and women's singles players
- Doubles Ladder: This ladder includes men's, women's, and mixed doubles players. One player can form multiple pairs with different partners on the ladder.
- The initial rankings on the ladders were determined based on individual players/player pairs' performance during UBC's 2005 tournament. The last place players/player pairs receive 50 points and every other play (player pairs) above the last place receives 10 more points according to their ranking.
- Any new players or player pairs who want to join the ladder must start with zero point.
- Players (pairs) are encouraged to challenge the players above him/her with a score difference less than 30 points between the challenger and the challenged (60 points for starters). Without the consent of UBC working committee, players are not encouraged (allowed) to challenge players 30 or more points above him/her on the ladder. To challenge a player, the challenger needs to make an appointment with the challenged and has two witnesses present during the match. Each finished challenge (regardless of result) automatically endows each player (player pairs) 10 points. The challenger is responsible for emailing the challenge match result to ubc@umn.edu and copying to the challenged.
- A player (or player pair) being challenged must agree at least once a month (unless there is a medical condition) to the challenges from the same player. Failure of agreeing to accept the challenge at least once a month will result in a deduction of 10 points. (It is the challenger's responsibility to inform UBC of the challenge being unaccepted for a month.)
- For a successful challenge, the challenger gains half of the point-difference originally listed between the challenger and the challenged, and the challenged loses a quarter of the point-difference originally listed between him/her and the challenger. During a UBC tournament, a win of a low-score player (player pairs) over a high-point player (player pairs) also counts as a successful challenge. In such case, the players not only gain or lose certain points as indicated before, but the low-point player also gains 15 extra points. A lost challenge during a UBC tournament will not endow either player any points.
- For a failed challenge, 0 points will be deducted from the challenging player and 10 points will be awarded to the player being challenged.
- When a challenge occurs between a female player (or player pair) and a male player (or player pair), the female player (or player pair) starts with 8 points advantage for each game. When a challenge occurs between a women's doubles pair and a mixed doubles pair, or a mixed double pair and a men's doubles pair, the pair with female player(s) always starts with 4 points advantage for each game. All matches comprise of best of three games (15 points/game).
- There is no upper or lower limit to the points a player can receive. The male and female players, men's, women's, and mixed double's player pairs with the highest score will be awarded by UBC by the end of each academic year.
