Excelsior Streetcar Line

On October 9th 2004 the club was
invitied to tour the ESL. With a wonderful clear morning they brought out both
operating cars and gave us rides on each along with a full tour of the shops
where two more cars are under restoration. Here are photos from that trip and
photos of every car on the line...
Thanks to everyone at MSM for a
great time!

Side by side you
can see the size difference between 1239 and little 78.
Duluth
Transit 78
Duluth Street Railway No. 78 was built in 1893 and still
rides smooth as the first day it entered service! This little two axle
streetcar is from the era when streetcar still looked like horse-drawn carrages
and had oranate design....

The beautiful old stove to heat the car in the
winter

TCRT 1239 Gate
Car
One of the last Gate Cars [see the photo below to see the huge
gates on this rear-only loading/unloading car] it entered service less than a
month before we got to ride!

And these are the rear end gates refered to in
the name...

Fall is great in Minnesota when the leaves start turning -

Mesaba Electric Interurban 10
This
is the only existing Minnesota interurban. Retired when Greyhound ended
interurban service in northern Minnesota [this was actually the first line to
shut down thanks to the Hibbing area company...] it is now resting in their
carbarn waiting to get into the shops once Winona 10 is ready to run [see below
for that]

Their line work speeder in front of the car -
you can see how the body is intact, but it will still take a lot of work...
Winona Streetcar 10
Last small town streetcar to operate
in Minnesota, this two axle car is in heavy restoration for re-entry to
service...

Look close and you can see the white trangles meeting at the
headlight...

A look at the old paint colors...
