Cliffs-Erie - 2004 [currently out of service]
LTV Steel - 1986-2002
Erie Mining Co. - pre-1986

Back from the dead!  (Fall 2004)
Shut down in 2001, the line came back to life in Sept 2004 to move more pellets left over from the shut down to the docks. F9's operating in 2004 in freight service - not something anyone expected to see!

From the camera of Dave Schauer - 4210 leads the first train on Sept 11 2004...

And seen here at Salem on Sept 23 2004 with F9 4211 on lease from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
Derailment - Oct 1 2004
At 7:30 PM an empty train was coming back into the yard to set out the empties from a trip to the docks when the lead unit derailed. Only minor damage has been reported and plans are to have the unit back on the tracks with the help of RS11 7209. That unit was on its way back from the docks as the last unit in the consist when it derailed.

The photos here were from midday on Oct 2 - thanks to Jim McLean for these views from inside the plant.

F9 4210 was the lead unit on the train that night - trailing were four F9B units, F9 4211 from LSRM, and RS11 7209 from General Railroad Supply.

Clearly not on the tracks - F9 4210 waits for help.

Another view of 4210

4210 displaced a bit of ballast when it hit the ground...

You can see the lead and the four trailing F9B units from here with the plant in the background...

The culprit - broken rail...

RS11 7209 - owned by General Railroad Supply and currently being used around the docks and yard areas

More on LTV including their locomotive dispositions

Cabooses

EMCO caboose 3 just before it left the plant in Nov 2004. The line had four cabooses like this one that were used on work trains, etc. Doug Buell photo

And here is what happened to #2 - it is now residing in Manitowoc , WI. Thanks to Damian Bushman for sending photos of his caboose being delivered in late January 2005!

LTV - before the shut down

The Charles M Beeghly leaves Taconite Harbor on Sept 25 1999 with a taconite train on the dock - seen here by Dave Schauer.

Classic Erie Mining photos

From Doug Buell's collection - some classic shots of Erie Mining in color! Look at the different color schemes including the complex RS11 color patterns...

A perfect lashup of F9 units lead by F9 #100 flies by the camera in June '59 (note the clean ballest and ditches - the track was just a few years old). G Wentworh photo - Doug Buell collection

And a transition era photo of how the stripes match up on the two F unit schemes, F9 #100 leades a trio of F9B units and a C420 out of the plant - Doug Buell collection
