A BRIEF HISTORY OF

THE MINNESOTA UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CAMPUS MINISTRIES

Fall 1983 Ted Tollefson, then minister of White Bear Unitarian Church, founded

this incarnation of UU campus ministry. (There had been earlier UU campus

ministries, also under the name University Unitarian Universalists.) Weekly

meetings were held on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus, with

Macalester College students also participating. Student leaders: Kim Miller, tom

kunesh, Tony Dahl, Karen Street. An alternative name of the organization was

International Student Community for Liberal Religion, but this was dropped in the

middle 1980s.

Fall 1986 James Park replaced Ted Tollefson as paid advisor to the UUU. Ted

became the first Chairman of the newly-formed Board of Directors, which consisted

of UUU members, representatives of the supporting UU congregations, and others

elected by them as at-large members. Student leaders: Tony Dahl, Nagarajan, Ann

Minnick.

Winter 1988 tom kunesh became staff member without pay while doing a ministerial

internship at the First Unitarian Society. Student leaders: Debbie Cash, Paul

Borst, Tony Dahl, Ann Minnick.

Fall 1989 tom kunesh became a paid staff member, sharing the salary with James

Park. A new constitution and by-laws formalized the roles of the Board of Directors

of the Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Campus Ministries (MUUCM, the new name

for the parent organization) and the University Unitarian Universalists (UUU, the

student organization at the U/M). Student leaders: Gaylen Moore, Ann Minnick.

1990-91 tom kunesh resigned to move to Tennessee, December 1990. MUUCM

received a grant from the UUA Young Adult Ministries during this school year.

Marilyn Moore and Phil Harper were hired as intern campus ministers for the year

for $100 each for expenses. For the last 5 months of this year, Phil Harper was

hired as the primary staff members. James Park remained as staff member for budget

and finance.

1991-92 Phil Harper & Marilyn Moore took over all paid staff functions.

In the Spring Quarter Marilyn Moore coordinated an Inter-Faith Dialogue among four

faiths: Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Unitarian-Universalist. James Park did

a program co-sponsored by the Minneapolis Student Union--Issues, Ideas, and Values

program on "The Dynamics of Adult Sexuality: What is Your Sex-Script?" A second

grant from YAM paid for the expanded staff.

1992-93 James Park was re-hired as MUUCM Administrator for the year. Jay

Adams took over as coordinator of the UUU as a volunteer.

1993-94 Jay Adams became the only paid staff member for the year.

1994-95 Jill Terwilliger was hired as Advisor to the UUU and Jay Adams

continued to volunteer his services. Beginning in April 1995, Charles Henderson

shared staff responsibilities and salary with Jill.

1995-96 Staff functions were shared by several past staff members:

Jay Adams, Jill Terwilliger, & Charles Henderson.

1996-97 Mary Parmenter was hired as the sole paid staff member.

This was also her internship in preparation for UU community ministry.

1997-98 Mary Samuels was hired to fulfill all staff functions.

1998-99 Carole Martignacco was hired to fulfill all staff functions.
