ABOUT ME

I am currently Senior Researcher in Comparative Fungal Biology at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, UK and have an Honorary Lectureship in the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth Unviersity in Wales. See my page at Kew here.

I am broadly interested in documenting and understanding patterns of fungal diversity and distribution and the processes that give rise to and maintain them. I focus on the mushrooms and allies, one of the largest and most successful group of fungi, and I have a special interest in porcini (see my Kew Science blog on porcini here), Pterulaceae, tropical mushrooms, and fungus-insect interactions, especially the fungus-farming ant mutualism.

I have conducted fieldwork in the USA, Canada, Britain, Greece, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Brazil, Madagascar, Cameroon, Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo), and Vietnam.

EDUCATION & CURRENT AND ONGOING PROJECTS

I graduated high-school from Duluth East (Duluth, MN) in 1996, received my B.A. in Biology (with Honors) in 2000 from Macalester College (St. Paul, MN), and a Ph.D. in 2007 from the McLaughlin Mycology Lab in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Minnesota. I then spent two years at the Royal Ontario Museum/University of Toronto working on DNA barcoding in mushroom-forming fungi (Dentinger et al. 2010, Dentinger et al. 2011) with Dr. Jean-Marc Moncalvo. During that time I continued to pursue a project on mushroom mimicry in Dracula orchids (Dentinger & Roy 2010) that I conceived during the final year of my Ph.D. The project first received funding from the National Geographic Society in 2007/2008 and then the National Science Foundation in 2009 (-2012), in collabortion with Dr. Bitty Roy. In 2009 I spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Roy at the University of Oregon, serving as Co-PI on the Dracula project. Most of this project became the Ph.D. thesis of Dr. Tobias Policha.
