September 23, 2005

The meeting began at 2 pm with introductions:

Jacqui Graham grah0183@umn.edu Anthropology student, in her junior year with a concentration in Biological Anthropology.  Currently enrolled in Sex, Evolution and Behavior and Forensic Anthropology classes. Jacqui had heard about the club when she was in high school but has not been able to attend the past 2 years.  It is great that she is here now!!

Ben Weidman benweidman@gmail.com Ben is a Super Senior major who is interested in all aspects of Anthropology.  Right now he is undecided as to whether his senior focus will fall in cultural or physical anthropology.

Elizabeth Noel noel0028@umn.edu An Anthropology major in her 2nd year, Elizabeth will probably be concentrating in physical anthropology, Archaeology.  She is currently enrolled in Sex, Evolution and Behavior, Intro to Archaeology and Archaeology of Prehistoric Europe.

Heidi Skallet skal0044@umn.edu Heidi is an Anthropology senior concentrating in biological anthropology.  She is taking Greg Laden’s 5990, Rise of Civilization, Forensic Anth. and working on her senior project planning.

Sally Goodman good0452@umn.edu What a delight to have Sally, a freshperson with no declared major right now, as part of the club!  She is taking Understanding Cultures with Karen-Sue Taussig, and is interested in a possible Anth. major.  Hooray!

Marina Kalinichev kali0096@umn.edu Marina is a 2nd year Anthropology Major with a potential double major in Linguistics.  She attended and participated in last year’s conference.  Her focus is primarily in cultural and linguistic Anthropology, and she is currently taking Ethnography and Ethnographic Method with Matthew Wolf-Meyer and Race and Culture with Professor Penn.

Jen Krieger  krie0106@umn.edu Jen is a 3rd year major focusing on Native American Archaeology.  She was involved in the club last year and attended the conference so she knows the ropes!  She is currently enrolled in Sex, Evolution and Behavior and a Native Policy class.

Ben Salyards saly0010@umn.edu A Global Studies and Anthropology dual major in his 4th year, Ben also attended the conference last year.  He is currently taking Matthew Wolf Meyer’s Ethnography and Ethnographic Method class, Culture Theory with Micha Penn, a Global Studies class with Stuart McLean, and Language, Culture and Power with Valentine.  He is uncertain about where his senior project will fall.

Greg Grossmeier gros0259@umn.edu Greg was the glue for the club last year in a lot of ways, and he will be acting as Webmisstress this year too…that is until he graduates in December!  Greg is not currently enrolled in any anthropology courses, but is focusing on finishing his degree requirements in other areas.

  • Martin Funk                 funkx053@umn.edu                 1st year Grad, Cultural Anth.
  • Jessica Kempen            kemp0158@umn.edu               3rd year Undergrad, Archeology
  • Marina Kalinichev         kali0096@umn.edu         2nd year Undergrad, Cultural Anth/Linguistics
  • Eli Carrotheart              nade0030@umn.edu                4th year Undergrad, Cultural Anth
  • Thomas Lenias                 leni0008@umn.edu                   3rd year Undergrad
  • Ben Salyards                saly0010@umn.edu
  • Business and Pleasure:
  • Introductions: Claire (Grad student advisor to the club), Peter, (Undergraduate Advisor, anthro and art history), David Lipset (Director Undergraduate Studies)
  • David invites all to undergraduate anthropology lunch Wednesday 11:30-1 in seminar room (389 HHH)
  • Peter’s schedule here in 385 HHH: Monday afternoons, Tuesday all day, Thursday all day, but the rest of it he will be in his other office (4th Floor Heller, sharing Fred Cooper’s office 420 or 421 to the left of the elevators, 625-2379 reaches both offices)
  • Heidi, Tom and Jessica have computer experience so that multiple people can update the website besides Greg, who is a rock star.
  • Potential Meeting times: Please e-mail your schedules and preferences to  anthro@umn.edu
  • ‘Twould appear that Fridays are preferred (late afternoon, around 2 pm so as not to conflict with archy bag lunches)
  • When we have meeting times agreed upon, we should give a flier to Peter to hand out to new students about meetings and projects etc.
  • Peter now has access to anth list serv but we should send everything to Sue Laska who has access to list servs for grads and undergrads. (liebe006@umn.edu)
  • Resources  Pass it on: we can use the computer, the printer, and the office in general.
  • Considered dates for the Open House:  A two-day open house?
  •  Monday September 19th and Tuesday September 20th from 12-2pm (Homecoming Week)
  • Decorating Party: all next week (the week of the 12th ) people will come in and bring their decorating stuff and on Friday we will gather together and put the stuff up.
  • Consider “Tales from the Field” series ongoing throughout the semester that grads and undergrads can participate in.  In the past a schedule was made up (Thursday afternoons, etc.) and people would volunteer their time and give talks.  Claire has suggestions for people we could ask to talk about their field experiences, both archy and cultural…
  • This would be something to advertise and be consistent about.  Organization is key.  Fun with visual aids.  good practice.
  • If we are thinking of having an ethnographic film series again (people have been asking about this already, perhaps a night other than Fridays?)  Peter suggests movie: Talking Trauma to which he has access.
  • Thanks all for coming!  Don’t forget to tell your friends about the club, our space, free food and cool anthropologists.
